08/2022 - NO. 1 SET 16U BLACK WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TO COMPLETE PERFECT UNDEFEATED SUMMER

STANFORD, CA -- The SET BLACK 16U Girls water polo team is the crowded nation's best. On Sunday, July 24th, the No. 1 seed SET 16U Girls showed they are the best of all time, completing a perfect summer season by winning the 2022 USA Water Polo National Championship with an 11-6 victory over third-ranked San Diego Shores at Avery Aquatics Center.

This is SET's sixth 16U Girls JO title, previously winning in 1994, 2013, 2014, 2018, and 2019. It is SET's 13th national championship on record since the club's founding in 1990.

The SET offense was led by center Sofia Umeda who racked up a hat trick, three goals, and an earned exclusion. SET scoring was rounded off by Hannah McClaskey (2), Kara Carver (2), Michelle Urkov (2), Emmy Hensley (1), and Presley Jones (1). Kamryn Barone found her teammates and finished the game with two assists and two earned ejections. Allison Cohen got into the mix with one assist and two earned ejections. Kate Sloman and Hadley Harbilas rounded out the starting group and finished with one assist and one earned ejection, and two shot attempts, respectively.

SET's defense was stellar all afternoon. Led by goalkeeper Sophia Bunnell with eleven blocks and five steals in the championship. Bunnell, the 2022 National Tournament Most Outstanding Player, was stifling and shutting down the SD Shores offense much of the day. Kara Carver was a defensive force with two steals, and Hannah McClaskey and Emmy Hensley each had one steal a piece. Michelle Urkov and Presley Jones each came away with a defensive shot block.

The Championship game was a story of a two-sided attack. SET would convert 11 of 25 shots for a 44% shooting percentage while holding SD Shore to 6 of 27 or 22% scoring.

The celebration was memorable for head coach Ally Beck, who has been at the helm of SET 16U Girls for two seasons. This championship is a tale of redemption and finishing what you start. This victory is for all the current and past athletes, especially the prior team 2021 second-place finishers, that are dedicated to being their best. It is icing on the cake as Beck retires from coaching to pursue sports management and consulting.

Post-season accolades did not stop, with 5 SET athletes being named all-tournament:

Sofia Umeda - First Team
Emerson Hensley - First Team
Michelle Urkov - Second Team

SET WATER POLO
Established 1990

SET Water Polo Club’s mission is to develop, train and instruct the youth of the program in the competitive sport of water polo.  The club’s goal is to develop youth into proficient water polo athletes as well as reinforcing the benefits of a healthy life style through sport, the essentials of team building skills and improving self-esteem. SET Junior Water Polo is an athlete-centered program that trains in an atmosphere that reinforces high self-esteem, teamwork, physical fitness and respect for others. SET WPC strives to produce well-rounded, well-balanced, health conscious athletic youth.

SET Water Polo strongly believes youth should never be denied the opportunity to participate in organized athletics solely because of an inability to pay the full tuition fee.  SET offers a limited amount of financial aid per training session for current members who experience financial difficulties and demonstrate need, subject to availability of funds.   All inquiries concerning financial aid should be addressed to the Club Director, Bradley Schumacher.

CLUB HISTORY

Saddleback El Toro (SET) Water Polo was founded in 1990 by Coach Don Stoll, the highest decorated water polo coach in CIF and High School Water Polo history. Prior to the surge of the national club water polo movement and the year-round water polo athlete, SET Water Polo was established by Coach Stoll as summer training program for his high school athletes. The SET summer training program played a vital role in the development of the Club’s athletes leading Coach Stoll to 684 career wins, 23 League Championship titles and 7 CIF Championship titles.

In 2004, three-time Olympian and Men’s OlympicTeam Captain, Wolf Wigo elevated SET from a summer training program to a year-round club water polo program. Trevor Rodin, a founding coach of modern SET movement and one-time teammate of Wigo, supported Wolf in teaching the foundational skills of water polo to the roughly 25 athletes of the developing club. In 2005, Coach Wigo was offered, and accepted, the head coaching position at University of California, Santa Barbara.

Coach Wigo turned SET over to his Olympic teammate and co-founder of Kap7 Inc., Bradley Schumacher before departing to UCSB.  As a two-time World Champion in swimming and water polo, a two-time Olympian in swimming and water polo and a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in swimming, Coach Schumacher’s philosophy of developing athletes with sound fundamentals governed the continuous evolution of the Club. Armed with 75 athletes, SET Water Polo exploded onto the National Level in the Summer of 2005 with SET’s 18U girls taking the Silver Medal in the 2005 National Junior Olympics and again taking the Silver Medal in the Women’s Top 40 Tournament later that Fall.

SET has swelled from 25 athletes to over 200 year-round athletes and in doing so has earned multiple National titles, was honored with USA Water Polo’s Chairman’s Cup in 2008 and in 2012 produced its first Olympic Gold Medalist, Annika Dries in Women’s Water Polo. As an ambassador of the sport, SET reached out to the community and established a Junior Water Polo Program 2008. SET’s Junior Water Polo Program introduces the sport of water polo to new athletes, ages 6-14, of varying ability and swimming proficiency by developing the fundamental skills and tactics of the game.

SET Water Polo is a fundamentally sound, student-athlete centered club that continuously strives to do what’s best for each individual athlete, priding it self on not being a win at all cost club. SET’s true success is not based on the accolades of its current athletes, but rather on the success each athlete yields after graduating from the Club and moving forward to college and beyond. Over 2,000 athletes have passed through the waters of SET Water Polo, producing NCAA Champions, Junior National Team Members, National Team Members and Olympic Athletes. To date, SET has secured in excess of 10 million dollars in scholarships for its athletes, which can be viewed on the Alumni Page. SET produces well-rounded student athletes with a strong work ethic and dynamic attention to detail skill set necessary to achieve success at the next level in athletics, academics and life.

Does SET offer Scholarships?

SET Water Polo is an athlete-centered organization that firmly believes youth should never be denied the opportunity to participate in organized athletics solely because of an inability to pay the full tuition fee. Therefore, SET offers a limited amount of financial aid per training session for current members who experience financial difficulties and demonstrate need, subject to the availability of funds.   All inquiries concerning financial assistance should be addressed to the Club Director, Bradley Schumacher.

October 2022 - SET Announces Teets, 16U Head Coach

SET Parents and Athletes,

We are excited to announce that Katie Teets will join SET Water Polo Club come Spring 2023 as our 16U Girls Head Coach.

Katie joins SET with a very impressive resume -- she was most recently the Associate Head Coach for six years at the top-ranked Division I program, the University of Hawai'i, from 2016- 2022. Teets was an ODP Zone Coach in the SoPac, San Diego, and Hawai'i zones for eight years between 2014-2021. Before coaching at Hawai'i, she was the Assistant Coach at Riverside City College from 2013-2016. Teets was also the Riverside Water Polo Club's 12U Girls' Head Coach from 2014-2016. Lastly, Teets was the Martin Luther King High School Assistant Coach from 2015- 2016.

Katie Teets not only has an accomplished coaching career thus far, but she also had a very high-level playing career to go along with it. Teets was a two-time All-American at Riverside City College in 2010 and 2011, where she won consecutive conference and Southern California Championships. In 2010, they were undefeated State Champions. Katie went on to play Division I water polo in 2012 and 2013 at the University of Hawai'i. At Hawai'i, Teets was a major impact player as a Captain her senior year when they won the 2013 Big West Conference Championship and made it to the semi-finals at the NCAA Tournament with a 4th place finish.

Katie earned her B.S. Degree at the University of Hawai'i in 2013 and her Ma.C. Degree at Concordia University in 2015.

We would be thrilled to have Katie join our coaching staff here at SET. She will bring high-level water polo knowledge, many years of coaching experience, top-notch technical and tactical coaching ability, and incredible leadership.

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Coach Katie Teets!

Regards,

Bradley Schumacher

SET Director

SET Training Programs

SET Water Polo Club designed the following training programs to the meet the individual developmental needs of athletes based on ability, goals and learning pace.

1. Learn to Play Water Polo: First Time Athlete
2. Age Group Water Polo: Athletes 14 and Under
3. Club/High School Water Polo: Athletes Grades 9-12
4. University Team: College Level Athletes

Learn to Play Water Polo

Splash-Ball, Introduction to Polo and Junior Water Polo are designed to introduce the sport of water polo to new athletes. Fundamental trainings followed by games and controlled scrimmages ensure that athletes have fun while at the same time developing and mastering the skills of the game. For more information on what group is right for my athlete or to get more information, please click here.

Age Group Water Polo Program

SET’s Age Group Training Program focuses on developing the tools athletes need to achieve their own personal potential, to exceed the boundaries of their physical gifts and talents in training environment that is fun, positive, team-oriented and well-rounded. The SET coaches collaboratively work together to progressively develop the fundamental skills of both individual and team play that is challenging, but never overwhelming. Water polo is a team sport; respect, teamwork and integrity are the steadfast guiding principals of the SET Age Group Training Program.

High School Training Program

Our High School Training Program focuses on providing training that addresses the fundamental skills necessary to have success at any level. The High School Training Program is comprised of athletes from multiple high schools in the South Orange County, all with varying abilities levels from Novice to Varsity, from High School Athletes to National Team Athletes. We encourage all athletes interested in training in an environment that focuses on high self-esteem, attention to detail and success through positive reinforcement to join SET for training.

Tournaments

SET provides all athletes with the opportunity to compete in scrimmages, games and tournaments each season. Prior to each event, a sign-up form is sent via email to member accounts regarding the various competition opportunities for each training session. The number of teams SET sends to an event direct corresponds with the number of athletes that register for each event. SET’s goal is to afford each athlete with the opportunity to compete in multiple events so they can test their continually developing abilities in a competitive environment. Teams are selected based on similar abilities, thus allowing for equitable playing time for each member of the team.

SET National Team Selection Criteria

This selection criteria is used for tournaments that limit entries or are a National Event where we cannot send multiple teams. Selection to represent SET Water Polo Club at a major National Events is earned by each and every player. It is important for to understand that SET is not a win at all costs club or an All-Star team. Our goal is to prepare athletes to succeed at the next level and to what is best for each athlete and for the team. The SET coaching staff utilizes the following in determining team rosters for National Events:

  • Mastery: How well do you understanding "SET" system of play?
  • Team Chemistry: How do you fit into the team you are trying out for? Do you have the ability to adapt your game to fill in where the team needs you?
  • Attitude: Are you willing to sacrifice for the team for success vs. individual success?
  • Commitment: Do you regularly attend trainings?
  • Communication: It is the responsibility of the athlete, not the parent, to communicate with the coaches regarding playtime, missed workouts, expectations and future opportunities.
  • Performance: How do you perform at trainings? Are you challenging yourself and your teammates?
Inviting Members to Re-Register

Go to the Compose Email form.

https://www.clubassistant.com/clubs/members/email/compose_email.cfm

Check mark who will receive the email.
Narrow the email database to the subset you want to invite to use the Re-Registration. If you don't have a clear subset yet, you can easily create a custom "Program", assign members to that "Program", and then mark the email to go out to only that "Program".

Include the custom re-registration link.
Go to the Options secrtion of the Compose Email.
Look for the "Links to Include" section.
Check mark "Include Online Re-Registration Link".
Edit the number of days you want the link to be available.

Including the "Online Re-Registration Link" will dynamically insert a unique and custom link for each member in the email they receive from you. In other words, each member's Re-Registration link is different and is coded to their own member profile.

Edit the Subject line.
Use a subject that is easy for families to find in their inbox because this email is custom with a unique link to their own membership.

Compose the message.
In the message box, type in the generic message for all of your members who are being invited to re-register. Tell them what to expect, such as online agreement to the new monthly recurring billing. Tell them to put in a credit card for recurring billing on X date each month. Tell them the due date by which you need this task completed.

Review the valediction.
The valediction is your email signature. Just do a quick check that it is current.

Preview.
The preview will not show you a real Re-Registration Link, but you'll get an idea of where it is placed in the message body.

Send.
If the Re-Registration process is ready to announce and you've got the correct list of recipients, then go ahead and send the email.
Next steps are monitoring and processing. See additional Article.
Monitoring and Processing Re-Registrations (or New Registrations)

After you invite members to re-register, you'll see them start to roll into the New Registrations dashboard.
https://www.clubassistant.com/clubs/members/new_registrations.cfm

Click on a member to proceed to their member form.

Go to the second section of the member form, called Membership and Billing.

Membership Status
Mark membership status as "Member" and put in a "Join Date". The "Join Date" can be the same date you see at the top of the member form where we show the form creation date. Or it can be a different date that you know the member actually began with the program.

Billing Plans
The most important section for creating automated dues processing is the Billing Plans section of each member form.

If your member has self-registered, the Billing Plans section should be pre-populated and it is your job as admin to approve it ro make corrections.

Make sure that the following are accurate:
  • Billing Frequency
  • Rate Description
  • Rate Amount
  • Payment Method

Do NOT type in a new Rate Description on a member form. If you need a new one, you should go to the Membership Fees module to either create a new Membership Fee or modify an old one.

Un-Check New Registration or Re-Registration

Look at the red note at the top left corner of the member form. If this member has self-registered either as a NEW registration or a Re-Registration, they will have a red note at top left of the member form. In order to approve and deposit this member into the recurring billing, you need to complete the steps above for Membership Status, Billing Plans, and also un-check the red flag for New Registration or Re-Registration.

Click Update to store your changes.

Tutorial - Setting Up Re-Registration

We call this a Re-Registration because you are inviting your current members to register, confirm their personal information, and update anything new, such as the new billing procedure.
Testing Link - the athlete re-registration experience.
Go to this link to read and consider what you want to change or add. Keep in mind that your current members will see their name, address, birth date, etc already populated on this page, so they will simply need to confirm or make corrections.
Proceed to fill in the form with test data and click forward through the pages, making note of all the things you want to change or add.
Making changes and additions - the admin portal.
For custom text, you will mostly work on this page - the Registration Custom Text page. This is where you will compose explanations of the new monthly recurring billing and anything you want athletes and parents to read.
For your own navigation to the above page, you'll go to the gear icon (Settings) >> General Preferences >> Registration Custom Text.
You can edit/add text, click update, and go refresh on the public registration link as often as you like to proof your work.
For membership fees, you will work in the Membership Fees module. Settings >>  Membership Fees.
More Testing
When the Custom text and the Membership Fees are what you want, you should process a full test registration from start to finish, including a test payment. This way, you'll be able to proof the receipt, the email confirmation and the depositing of the member into the New Registrations dashboard.
